Installing Pull Down Attic Stairs
Nothing is more frustrating than having to pull out a step ladder
every time a homeowner wants access to their attic. Pull down stairs offer a convenient, relatively inexpensive option
which allows absolutely uninhibited access to an attic for storage. We've done quite a few of these installations.
Here is our latest project. It is part of a major home renovation.
We start by preparing the "rough opening" for the installation. Once adequately sized, we place 1"X3" wood boards
which function as "cleats" for us to rest the stair assembly. Once in place, we use shims to
provide support and spacing. Although the manufacturer recommends 3" wood screws, we use
3" lag bolts, drilled through the shims, to secure the assembly. The stairs are then trimmed appropriately and molding is placed around the opening.
